i’m probably one of the few who thinks watson actually did faint in EMPT and that he forgave holmes the instant he appeared.
it’s just so important to me to see watson being overwhelmed by holmes’ sudden ressurection. watson has been surrounded by death for so long. he’s a doctor and he was a soldier in war. he saw his whol regiment get slaughered until precious few remained of the 66th Berkshires. no one knows that dead people remain dead more intimately than watson – and suddenly holmes comes back.
also, i know that watson was hurt by holmes’ choice to keep him out of the loop. i know he felt betrayed and angry. he was so wounded by everything that had transpired – he had finished his grieving and suddenly holmes was back in his life.
they didn’t ease back into their normal patterns and nothing was every really the same, but watson forgave holmes. he forgave holmes because watson knows the man. he can see past the outwardly cold actions and see the heart inside them and that’s just so important to me.
because there is no one in the world who can look at holmes and see all the subtle clues, the double meanings, the hidden heart.
plus, the relief and joy of having his friend back far outweighs his anger.
