_{words from acd; i think on of the reasons why holmes  awas so life-like was because he starred in a series of stories over a long period of time. he had a run from 1887 (STUD ) -1927 (SHOS). a run of forty years and in those forty years he changed. he laughed and he was sad, he felt triumph and loss, lived and died. the stories were inconsistent ( sometimes hilariously so ) but i think its that inconsistency that gave the stories a breath of life}
